New Anthrax Song - Fight 'Em Till You Can't. Is that some wimpy chorus?

If you woke up this morning and took a look at Metal Sucks, or whatever metal blog you read that's not as epic and underground as mine, you would've seen that there is some new Anthrax for you to mosh alone in your bedroom to. Or so I would've thought anyway. Apparently Anthrax has been playing this song live for the last 3 years, and I just didn't have half a part of a fucking clue about any of it. Probably because I didn't think Anthrax was worth considering in a very long time now. It is however, a big deal, in the sense that it's the first time Joey Belladonna has lent his voice to an Anthrax recording in over 20 years, if you don't consider the “Ball of Confusion” cover Belladonna recorded with John Bush for 1999′s Return of the Killer A’s. Their new album Worship Music has been hyped up for quite a while now, and finally has a solid release date of "September 13th".

So I'm listening to this track, and it's alright. It's certainly no "Among the Living", and Belladonna's voice isn't anywhere near what it used to be. Then again, neither is Tom Araya's, Dave Mustaine's, and certainly not James Hetfield's, so considering the trend of how all Big 4 bands suck at singing now, I guess I should let that one slide. Then I listen to the song's chorus, and I'm no longer in such a forgiving attitude.

For those of you at work or school or wherever you shouldn't be reading my blog, and you aren't able to listen to the song: The best way I can put it, is it's sort of like a metalcore style chorus. A METALCORUS. Anyone familiar with Brian Posehn's "Metal by Numbers" should feel free to chime in with "This is the gay paaaart!" This chorus is wimpy, and fluffy and weak. Not very Anthrax, and definitely not very metal.

I thought you were just exaggerating until I actually heard the chorus. It does sound like some kind of gay, deathcore clean singing pussy bullshit. Wow.

  2. It has potential, but that "gay" chorus is bad.

I still think the couplets are great and usually it is the most commercial song that get's the single so let's hope that the rest of the album turns out great.

And to be honest, the chorus isn't as gay as most metalcore choruses... obviously. But it's still weak.

While this is true, Araya still manages to sound great at times (hit or miss). Sure he's aged and it shows, but he still comes as close to his youthful self than any of the other guys. But I've yet to hear this new Anthrax song, haven't been keeping up with them in a long time...

  9. This is indeed very metalcore. Sounds like BFMV except with better guitars. I really would'nt be surprised if i see an anthrax edition of monopoly somewhere.

  11. Even though you all are entitled to an opinion, I feel you guys don't quite apprehend what actually is happening here with this song. Obviously it will never compare to earlier Anthrax. What band still maintains such high expectations after 30+ years? This song illustrates how Anthrax still possesses the ability to "shred" while displaying their continued ability to capture newer fans. We all can concur this song is slightly more "trendy" than we are accustomed with, but f*** man, give Anthrax a little more f'n respect. Metalcore will never possess rhetoric this thoughtfully formulated. Conjointly, Anthrax is more metal than all of you, and with that being said, you can take your girlfriend's pants off now and properly apologize to the metal gods for your abhorrent slander to all things metal.

  13. The song was much better than I was expecting, and I didn't think the chorus was metalcore-eqsue. We'll see how the rest of the album is.

  14. I thought the chorus had more of a power metal feel to it.

The song started pretty good. But yeah, it becomes unbearable after that chorus. I still have hope in their new album though. Their song, vampires, is not bad.

@ Jim - just because they have the ability to shred doesn't mean they're making quality music that's worth a damn to listen to. It doesn't matter if they've been doing it for 30+ years; if anything after that long they should be master songwriters putting out songs that don't need an apology about being old fogeys to enjoy.

  17. Kenny why don't you read the words underneath "Post a Comment". You know, the ones in black bold, right above the comment box? Just sound out the letters. I know you can do it.

  19. That chorus sounds more like Power Metal than Metalcore to me...

But it's still weak, I expected more from Anthrax

  20. What people don't understand is that Joey wasn't made to sing this song. The song was originally made for Dan Nelson to sing. Don't get me wrong, it is great hearing Joey again on an Anthrax Studio album, but I think that they should have kept Dan Nelson or even John Bush. Let's hope that Worship Music is worth the money.

Also, there is no way in hell it sounds like a Metalcore-esque chorus. Power Metal maybe, but definitely not Metalcore...Anthrax aren't pussies.

  21. Eddie Gill: Song still blows man, no matter who sings it. You can enjoy your "Power Metal maybe, but definitely not Metalcore-esque chorus" by yourself.

Mandatory triviumesque butt rock choruses or else no air play, mtv, zines and record sales, generic riffing goes without saying. Am i the only one who never cared for them besides Fistful of Metal?

"quite apprehend what actually is happening here with this song" think he meant "comprehend" but i applaud that guy for his efforts in spelling and grammar compared to other trolls.

  24. Er... I'm gonna follow the "It's Power Metal" crowd on this one. Your Metal wisdom is ostensibly as all-encompassing as McDonalds is the biggest franchise in the arena of eating, growing obese, and shitting, but I'm gonna have to question your ruling on this one.

  25. Haha man I didn't expect this to be quite as bad but fuck me sideways this shit is worse than getting bummed by elephant whilst being forced to listen to bring me the hair saloon. I mean it started off pretty well, but it sounds way too much like some shit bullet for my valentine would release. Anyone done a review on the new Morbid Angel album yet? That would be rather entertaining...

  28. Really? to me it doesn't sound any different from a type of chorus, say, Bruce Dickinson would do, hell, even Ronny James Dio sang melodic choruses. Get the sticks out of your asses, people.

  29. Go play somewhere else Fuckers!!!This song is awsome and it is pure Anthrax and it is pure Metal!!!

  30. The lyrics sounded decent for an old Belladonna, aside from the chorus that does sound a bit weak and fruity. The thing I do like about this song is the riffs and shredding.......Scott Ian has not slipped at all and still sounds awesome!!

  31. I have ALWAYS hated Anthrax for their fucking gay-ass choruses. I hated shit like "NFL! Efilnikufesin! NFL! No fuckin life!" for the gay-ass chorus, and this is the same dumb shit. It's like teenager poetry. And OH THAT'S SO ORIGINAL, ZOMBIES! Wow how on earth do they come up with this cutting edge shit.

Anthrax needs to just go the fuck away already.
