Judas Priest with James Durbin

I went to my parents' house last night after an evening of metal. As usual during the middle of the week, they were watching American Idol. Having watched the entire season, they were eagerly awaiting to discover this year's winner and next year's do nothing, be nothing.

Some 16-year-old country singer Scotty something (it doesn't really matter because he, like 90% of the winners, will be forgotten like last night's quickie with a lonely fat chick) took home the grand prize: American Idol winner, privy to an (un)exclusive recording contract. He hugged everyone in the building except Jack Black, which gave my father reason to inform me that the aforementioned Black performed a duet with some ginger named Casey (I don't care if I spelled his name right) earlier in the programming and due to the wonders of Digital Video Recording, he promptly re-started and commenced to fast forward to show me the performance that I really didn't care about.

Then I saw this:

This cannot be unseen. I really don't have anything else to say. Seriously. Why does Halford need to perform a duet with cast-off season 10 Idol contestant and (I use this next quote loosely) "metal" personality, James Durbin? Does Priest really need to remain relevant to a younger audience roughly one month before their final World Tour? This is probably the type of "extravaganza" one might expect at an upcoming show.

  1. It just so happens that I'll be doing an A-Z on Priest today and detail why this band has always been overrated. But yes...after seeing them in '86 I don't care to see this last incarnation of the band. On the flip side.....Metal of any sort finally made it's way on a show that has glorified karaoke singing for years with tired covers of pop songs. There is a bit of a silver lining in that. But not much.

  3. Why would you even listen to Judas priest when you got Obituary, Martin van Drunen, Obscura and Vektor!

Judas priest are as metal as Kiss with their Living after midnight shit. Obscura, Martin van Drunen, Vektor, Obituary never, NEVER sold out! Why? Because they are goddamn metal and only want the best for metal music!

  5. timve: The Painkiller album slays everything you just mentioned in pure true metalocity. And although Obituary may have never "sold out", one of their guitarists started Six Feet Under with Chris Barnes, which I consider to be worse.

  6. The members of Obituary can be as unmetal as they want, as long as they don't ruin the name and the legacy of Obituary. It makes the person less metal, not the band.
If Rob Halford wants to do a pop/rap/r&b side project, no problem. If he does that under the name "Judas priest"... Big problem!

To be honest, I like Painkiller, but I don't think it's better then Slowly we rot or Black future.

  8. Obituary Never sold out? perhaps not, but they did make a death metal rap song in Bullituary.

  9. Painkiller is the ultimate heavy metal album. There has never been an album capable of out metalling Painkiller. Ever. No matter how much abuse they're putting their career through this last year, Painkiller remains as the undisputed overlord of metal albums.

  10. Painkiller is a good album, but there are albums out here that are better. Obituary have a death metal/rap song, but that one wasn't made by Obituary, but by some silly dj's. And Judas Priest have Breaking the law, which I consider worse then the Bullituary (remix) which is a remix!!! A remix!!!! So who cares, nobody cares for remixes never so why care for this one?

  11. I'm constantly amazed at how high a pedestal Painkiller gets put up on after all these years. It was an attempt to fix the rep damage they had from using synthesized guitars on the previous two albums and going a pop direction with it. So then they introduce falsetto screams and speed riffs. But the lyrics....my god....the lyrics are still horribly cheesy.
Painkiller was not a good album people. Go back and really listen to it.

  12. I'll give you that, Rob. Though if you call out Priest for cheesy lyrics on Painkiller then you have to call out Manowar on every album and Dio for at least Holy Diver. Lyrics are only one part of a song and one part of an album. Why so many love Painkiller is that it happens to be among, if not the, heaviest of all they produced.
